acdc’s COGLED luminaires have been used to great effect on Saint Alkmund’s Way Cycle and Footbridge that provides a direct link over the A601 between Derby City Centre and St Mary’s Catholic Church.

acdc was approached by Derby City Council to improve the poor quality lighting on the footbridge, which was coming to the end of its serviceable life.  It was opened in 2007, with 37 fittings integrated into the panels of the bridge to produce a wave of colours (RGB) and a projection of sound. However over the years this has stopped working due to a failure of the equipment, ingress of water and vandalism and existing illumination levels had become very poor.

Viewed by an estimated 1,500 pedestrian and 70,000 motorists every single day, one of Derby’s most-seen bridges was originally a joint design project by the council and public artist Denis O’Connor. The council designed the structure, while the artwork which adorns the bridge, the loom, silk strands and bobbins were designed by Mr O’Connor. acdc worked closely with Balfour Beatty to specify the products and come up with the bespoke design.

The installation of the new LED lights on St Alkmund’s Way footbridge is being funded by a Section 106 agreement struck when Jurys Inn was built, to give additional funding to enhance the area nearby. The money will finance the cost and installation of the light fixtures, the cost of electricity and the maintenance. The lighting will be maintained by Balfour Beatty under an agreement signed with the council that runs until 2032.

The project came with a challenging brief that included an unusual lighting effect that could be triggered into different lighting colours by the movement of people. Following removal of the existing lighting, acdc’s COGLED luminaires were installed incorporating the acdc Magna and Eclipse.

Magna is an IP67 rated compact, in-ground, triple LED marker light & wallwash luminaire delivering 350lm. Also IP67, Eclipse is a micro floor or wall recessed LED luminaire with eyelid option for minimal glare, delivering 90lm. The LED fittings were installed as part of a system incorporating the RGB colour model and a DMX controller. The RGB colour model is an additive colour model in which red, green and blue light are added together in various ways to reproduce a broad array of colours, which in this case is to produce a wave effect on the bridge.

Needless to say, Derby Council is delighted with the scheme which has resulted in a substantial energy savings, a long maintenance free life, higher levels of illumination and an aesthetically stunning bridge that has had a fantastic response from users.
