Budgeting for storage during a renovation

When budgeting for a rebuild or renovation, one of the items most frequently overlooked is storage. You will almost certainly need to remove your possessions from at least part of the property to keep everything safe and create space for the contractors, but this is often a last-minute decision. Britannia Movers have been providing removals and storage services across the UK for over 40 years, and can offer some valuable tips to ensure you don’t pay more than you need to.

There are several types of storage, all of which have different features and sit at varying price points:

Self storage

Usually offering 24/7 access and a secure space of your own inside a converted or purpose-built warehouse, this is the most sought-after storage option. Whether you are looking to store a few boxes or your entire home contents, Britannia can offer a unit size to suit. The main benefit of self storage is that you have access to your belongings as and when you want, but this does mean that the cost is slightly higher. If you don’t need regular access to all of your goods, you may want to consider renting a small self storage locker for items that you will definitely need to access (such as sports equipment, suitcases, or seasonal clothing), and then put the remainder into a more cost-effective form of storage.

Many operators offer low-cost introductory prices for the first few weeks of self storage, so this may be something to consider when comparing the options.

Warehouse storage

Traditional warehouse storage is usually operated by removals companies such as Britannia Movers, with warehouses divided into wooden containers, each of which can store up to 250 cubic feet (roughly equivalent to an average garden shed). It is possible to access your goods when they are in warehouse storage, but only during office hours and there will usually be an access fee for the retrieval of your containers. It can also be tricky to find what you need, as the containers will be packed quite tightly! Therefore, this type of service is perfect if you don’t need to access your contents whilst they are being stored. Britannia Movers also offer a full door-to-door service where they can securely pack your possessions, bring them into storage, safely load them into the containers and then deliver back to your property once you are ready.

External storage

Another option is storage via steel shipping containers or drive-up units, which are more common in the USA but are starting to appear in the UK as well. Access options will depend on your provider, and this will affect the cost, but it is usually cheaper than internal self storage rooms.

The advantage is that you can drive right up to your unit, so loading and unloading is easier. However, in bad weather this may be a disadvantage too!

Whichever storage option best suits you, be assured that all Britannia warehouses are protected by state-of-the-art security alarm systems and CCTV. Smoke and fire detectors are in place as well as defences against flooding and water damage. Therefore, you can rest assured that your belongings are safe at all times.
